Here's how I met Giorgio. In 1975 I was touring Bangkok and
Japan as a singer and I met and fell in love with a German
actor, Wolf Roth. I moved to Berlin, Germany with him later
that year. Before I left for Germany I met with my friend
Maury Lathouwer, a record producer here in the U.S., who was
working with Casablanca Records at the time. He told me to
look up Giorgio Moroder in Munich since Casablanca had just
signed a contract with him to release Donna Summer and he
might use me as a background singer.
In the summer of 1976 I was finally in Munich and got up the
courage to call Giorgio. He told me to come by his offices
in the Arabellahaus Hotel where he had a wonderful underground
recording studio. We hit it off immediately and within a few
days he had me in the studio recording my first song "Disco
Man". It was released only in England, I believe.
Then Giorgio had the idea for "Munich Machine introducing
Chris Bennett", a disco record featuring an new version
of Procol Harem's "Whiter Shade Of Pale". We recorded
it later that year and it went on to do well in international
discos.
After that came "Giorgio and Chris" our duet album.
I also wrote lyrics for many of his projects including
future "Munich Machine" albums and several cuts
for the Three Degrees.
At that time Giorgio's English wasn't as good as it is
now so either Pete Bellotte or I did the lyrics. |

I
liked Giorgio from the beginning. He had a knack for knowing
what the public wanted and could go into the studio and
come out in a few hours with a hit!
The nicest opportunity he gave me was asking me to write
the lyrics for the "Love Theme From Midnight Express"
which went on to be nominated for a Grammy. Of course,
Giorgio's score for the film won him the Academy Award
and was really the first film score done entirely with
synthesizers. |

Giorgio
was, and is, a pioneer in music and almost singlehandedly
launched the Disco revolution.
