The Berlin Biographie

A short description about the Berlin

Terri Nunn in a Promo picture

This US band from Los Angeles was formed in the summer of 1979 as a new wave/electro pop group. The founding members were John Crawford (bass/synthesizer, ex-Videos) with Terri Nunn (born 26 June 1961; vocals), Virginia McCalino (vocals), Jo Julian (synthesizer), Chris Velasco (guitar) and Dan Van Patten (drums, ex-Barbies).

They signed to IRS in the USA, but managed only one single before they broke up in 1981. However, Crawford and Nunn formed a new band almost immediately with David Diamond (guitars), Rick Olsen (guitar), Matt Reid (keyboards) and Rod Learned (drums).
Their first recording was the 1983 mini-album Pleasure Victim (not released in the UK) followed by the full long player Love Life the following year. They gained a US Top 30 hit in April 1984 with 'No More Words', before dropping down to a three piece of Crawford, Nunn and Rob Brill on drums the following year. By 1986 they had a number 1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic with a song they would become almost exclusively associated with, 'Take My Breath Away'.
It was the theme song to the highly lucrative movie Top Gun, and had been produced and co-written by veteran producer Giorgio Moroder. Although follow-up singles fared less well, 'Breath...' has proved to be a perennial favourite re-entering the charts in 1988 and going into the UK Top 3 on re-issue in 1990 as a result of its use in television car commercials.

Lyrics of:

    Take my Breath Away
    from "Top Gun" ( 1986 )

    Watching every motion
    In my foolish lover's game
    On this endless ocean
    Finally lovers know no shame
    Turning and returning
    To some secret place inside
    Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say

    Take my breath away
    Take my breath away

    Watching I keep waiting
    Still anticipating love
    Never hesitating
    To become the fated ones
    Turning and returning
To some secret place to hide
    Watching in slow motion
As you turn to me and say

    Take my breath away
    Take my breath away

Through the hourglass I saw you
    In time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you
And turned to hear you say
    If only for today
    I am unafraid

    Take my breath away
    Take my breath away

    Watching every motion
    In this foolish lover's game
    Haunted by the notion
Somewhere there's a love in flames
    Turning and returning
    To some secret place inside
    Watching in slow motion
As you turn my way and say

    Take my breath away
    Take my breath away
